WiMAX is considered a 4G technology because it involves a significant change in the backbone of the network as were needed when 2G and 3G networks were released. WiMAX should not be confused with shorter distance Wi-Fi and is a direct competitor with LTE.
Currently U.S. carriers utilizing WiMAX are Sprint Nextel in cooperation with Clearwire.
