As with the introduction of 3G, products or technologies may be marketed as 4G but do not actually meet up with the standards for 4G. Currently it appears that WiMAX and LTE may be considered 4G technologies but I have had some difficulty into finding the precise requirements.

Generally the 4G standard should include:
- 100 Mbit/s for mobile devices up to 1 Gbit/s for stationary devices.
- An all IP based solution
